What to Do When You’re Sick in Cantabria — A Quick Guide for Newcomers
Getting sick in a new country can be stressful—but it doesn’t have to be. In Cantabria, Spain, you have access to excellent healthcare, whether you’re in the public system or using private services. Here's what you need to know to feel prepared and confident when health issues come up.
🏥 Public Healthcare (Sistema Nacional de Salud - SNS)
If you're a legal resident (or in the process of becoming one), you're likely eligible for Spain’s public healthcare system, which is universal and largely free.
You’ll be assigned a local health centre(Centro de Salud) based on your address.
You’ll receive a SIP card (Tarjeta Sanitaria), which allows you to book appointments and receive care.
Book a doctor’s appointment by calling your health centre or using their online portal (some regions offer apps too).
Emergency care is available 24/7 at hospitals and emergency centers (Urgencias).
📌 Tip: Even if you don’t speak fluent Spanish, many health centers in Cantabria are accustomed to helping international residents. Still, having a translation app or bringing someone who speaks Spanish can be a big help.
💊 What If It's Just a Cold?
For common colds, flu, or mild symptoms:
Visit your pharmacy (farmacia) first. Spanish pharmacists are well-trained and can recommend over-the-counter solutions—or tell you when to see a doctor.
You don’t need a prescription for many basic medications.
🩻 Private Healthcare Options
Prefer shorter wait times or English-speaking doctors? Cantabria also has a number of private clinics and hospitals.
You can pay out of pocket or use private health insurance.
We can connect you with trusted English-speaking doctors and specialists.
🚑 Emergencies
Dial 112 for any medical emergency—this is the general emergency number in Spain.
For urgent but non-life-threatening issues, go to your nearest hospital’s Urgencias department.
