Fiesta Season in Cantabria: More Than Just a Party
If you’re planning a move to Cantabria, there’s one thing you’ll learn very quickly — Spain loves a fiesta. And here in the north, those long summer days are just the beginning of a vibrant season full of colour, music, food, and community spirit.
But beyond the excitement, what does “fiesta season” really mean when you’re living here?
What Are Fiestas, Really?
You might already be familiar with Spain’s headline-making fiestas — the bull run in Pamplona or the La Tomatina tomato fight in Valencia. But Cantabria has its own unique rhythm. While the big-name events dominate the global imagination, the soul of Spanish fiesta culture is found in its smaller, local celebrations.
Here in Cantabria, every town, village, and city has its own fiesta, usually in honour of a patron saint. These aren’t just days off — they’re week-long celebrations packed with free events, traditional music, dancing, parades, games, and (of course) unforgettable food.
Local Holidays – A Quirky Adjustment
When you first move here, it can be a bit confusing: fiesta days are local holidays, meaning one town might be closed while the next one over is business as usual.
For example:
Santander celebrates one of its local fiestas on June 9th, so everything shuts down — unless you live or work just outside the city, where it might be a normal working day.
Maliaño, a large nearby suburb, has its fiesta on June 24th. If you live there but work in Santander, don’t expect the day off!

A good tip is to grab a (usually free) calendar from your local council office at the start of each year to keep track.
