Get to Know Cantabria: Cabárceno Natural Park
If you’ve just moved to Cantabria — or you’re considering it — one of the places you will hear about very quickly is Cabárceno Natural Park.
Often described as a safari park, Cabárceno is actually something quite unique. Built in a former open-cast iron mine, the park covers more than 750 hectares of dramatic limestone landscape, where animals from around the world live in large semi-free enclosures.
It’s one of those places that surprises people — not only because of the animals, but because of the sheer scale of the park and the incredible scenery.
Where is it?
Cabárceno Natural Park is located in the Pas valley area of Cantabria, about 20 km south of Santander.
The park is spread across a huge area of former mining land, creating a landscape of rocky peaks, lakes and wide valleys where animals roam in large enclosures.
Distance from Santander
• About 20 km
• Around 25 minutes by car
This makes it one of the easiest day trips from Santander and a favourite weekend activity for families.
Public transport
Public transport options are limited, so most visitors arrive by car.
Because the park is so large, visitors usually drive between the different animal areas inside the park itself.
What it’s known for
Cabárceno is home to over 100 animal species from five continents. Some of the most popular include:
• Elephants
• Brown bears
• Giraffes
• Gorillas
• Rhinos
• Lions
One of the highlights is the bird of prey demonstration, where you can see eagles, vultures and other birds flying across the dramatic landscape.
Another unique feature is the cable car system, which offers panoramic views across the park and its wildlife.
Best time to visit
Cabárceno is open year-round, but the experience changes with the seasons.
Spring and autumn are often the best times to visit, with comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds.
Summer is very popular, especially with families, while winter visits can be quieter and offer beautiful views across the park.
Good to know
• The park is huge, so plan several hours for your visit
• A car is very helpful for getting around
• Weekends and holidays can be busy
• Bring water, comfortable shoes and a camera
Why we love it
Cabárceno is one of those places that reminds you just how varied Cantabria is. In less than half an hour from Santander you can find yourself surrounded by mountains, wildlife and huge open landscapes.
For many families moving here, it becomes one of those places you return to again and again.
