How to Get Your Spanish Driving Licence in 5 Steps

If you’re living in Spain long-term, at some point you’ll need to swap your foreign licence or get a Spanish one. If you’re an EU citizen you can use your home country-issued licence until it expires, then simply swap it over when it’s time to renew.

If you’ve moved to Spain from outside the EU, you have 6 months from the date you entered the country to obtain a Spanish Driving Licence - which means taking a driving test!

On average, expect the process to take around six months from start to finish, so if you need a driving licence, it’s a good idea to start the process soon after you move. Here’s how to do it.

1. Enrol in a Driving School

The first step is registering with a driving school (autoescuela). Once enrolled, you’ll receive study materials (often available in English) to prepare for the theory exam.

You’ll also need to bring two passport photos, which will be used in your application.

2. Get a Medical Certificate (Certificado Médico de Conducir)

Before applying for the exam, you’ll need a medical certificate. This is valid for 90 days, so make sure you book your theory test before it expires.

What to expect:

  • A quick health check (blood pressure, vision, hearing, reflexes).

  • A steering and attention test.

  • Questions about any major health issues.

You must usually show proof of driving school enrolment before booking your medical appointment.

3. Apply for the Theory Exam

To apply, you’ll need:

  • NIE or passport

  • Proof of residence in Spain

  • Medical certificate

  • 2 passport photos

Your driving school will help submit the paperwork.

4. Pass the Theory Exam

The theory exam consists of 30 questions, and you can only miss up to 3. The fail rate is quite high, so expect to study thoroughly — there are around 3,000 potential questions.

Useful tip: practicatest.com is an excellent resource for practice.

Costs:

  • Exam fee: 94.05€ (covers two attempts)

  • Driving school admin fee: around 30€

If you don’t pass within two attempts, you’ll need to reapply and pay again. Once you pass, the result is valid for two years, during which you must complete the practical test.

5. Take Lessons and Pass the Practical Exam

After passing the theory test, you’ll begin driving lessons with an instructor. Most schools offer lesson packs of 5–10 sessions. When your instructor feels you’re ready, they’ll schedule your practical exam.

Be prepared: there’s currently a shortage of instructors in many areas, which can delay scheduling.

Once you pass the practical exam — congratulations! You’ll receive your Spanish driving licence and can legally drive across the EU.

Final Tip: The whole process takes most people about six months. Be patient, keep practising, and you’ll get there!
