Your Dream and Vision of Life in Spain

This week, the Spanish Government announced two key updates to the Non-Lucrative Visa application process — one of the most popular routes for retirees and those who wish to live in Spain without working.

The first change affects retirees: applicants are now required to provide official proof of retirement at the time of their visa application. This means you must already be retired before you apply, rather than retiring once you arrive in Spain.

The second update gives greater importance to your Letter of Intent, also known as the Motivation Letter. This document now carries more weight in your application and is your opportunity to paint a clear picture of your dream life in Spain.

What to Include in Your Letter of Intent

Your letter should reflect your vision of daily life in Spain — why you want to move here, where you hope to live, and how you plan to spend your time. It’s also a chance to show your intention to become part of the community. You’ll want to include details such as:

  • Whether you plan to take Spanish language classes

  • How you intend to participate in local activities, clubs, or volunteering

  • What draws you to your chosen region — perhaps the landscape, culture, or way of life

This letter isn’t just a formality. It’s your chance to express what many of us feel when we imagine life in Spain: a slower rhythm, a stronger sense of community, and a deep connection to nature and culture.
